It sounds impossible, but criminals really can steal your home. Using fake IDs, they transfer ownership from your name to theirs. Once they “own” it on paper, they take out large loans against the property, drain your equity, and leave you with the debt.
Thieves often target vacation homes, empty rental properties, or mortgage-free homes — places where owners may not notice the fraud right away.
If you suspect your identity has been compromised, contact credit reporting agencies immediately and place a fraud alert to help protect your home.
