Preparing Children for a Move
Families move for many reasons… some happy, such as for a job transfer… and others not so happy, like moving because of a divorce or financial problems.
As disruptive as moving can be for parents, the experience can be even more traumatic for children. Here are a few tips to make the transition easier for your kids.
Discuss the move openly with your children. Let them know how excited you are about it. If possible, get your kids involved in choosing your new home.
Ask them how they would like to decorate their new room and maybe even go looking for paint colors! Get a feel for your children’s temperament about the move and try to avoid moving during crucial times of the school year.
If your kids will be changing schools, make time to visit their new school with them.
Children eight and under are less attached to people (such as friends) but are very attached to places and routines… so keep as much of their normal routine in place as possible.
And after moving day, try to get your children’s rooms in order first before turning your attention to the rest of the home. It will help them have a positive outlook about their new surroundings.
